Australia’s Robbie McEwen, who rides for Predictor, won the sprint in the second stage of the Tour of Italy, between Tempio Pausania and Bosa, in Sardinia last Sunday. Italy’s Danilo Di Luca, one of the favourites who rides for the Liquigas team, took the leader’s pink jersey.
McEwen beat out reigning Olympic and world champion Paolo Bettini of Italy to the line following the 205km stage. Italy’s Alessandro Petacchi was overtaken in the last 100m by McEwen after he had tucked in behind Petacchi’s back wheel. ‘I said that I would be riding in this race to win a stage. I’ve achieved that goal and I’m very satisfied’, McEwen said. ‘During the finish, I knew that Bettini was on my back wheel but I was confident’.
