Murder in the mountains

(issue no. 82/2008 / June 26, 2008)
Mysterious death in the outskirts of Florence

Stefano Ciolli, a 47-year-old local entrepreneur who worked in the transport sector, lived in Greve in Chianti with wife and 17-year-old son. His friends describe him as a good-natured man without any known enemies.

After having dinner with his family on June 14, he left his home at 2am, never to return. A day later, his body was found under an olive tree in the San Casciano Val di Pesa area, the area of the Monster of Florence murders. Police report that he was most likely killed by a blow to the head, possibly with a stone, then doused with fuel and set aflame.

A woman who was walking her dog in the early morning hours of June 15 came across the body and called the police. His car, a black Cls 320 Mercedes Benz, was found parked in the parking lot of the Novo Hotel in Osmannoro. The windows were open and the keys still in the ignition.

Police believe the murder may be related to Ciolli's finances. He is said to have had many debts after the bankruptcy of his Novoli-based transport business. They are also investigating a possible mafia connection.
