A galaxy far, far away

(issue no. 111/2009 / November 5, 2009)

A group of international scientists, led by Stefano Andreon of the National Institute for Astrophysics in Milan, recently identified a remote galaxy cluster as the farthest from the Earth. Known as JKC2041, the cluster is approximately 10.2 billion light years away. ‘The simple existence of JKCS041 is the clearest demonstration of the fact we have not yet reached the confines of the knowable universe,' Andreon told the press. The discovery is being hailed as an important step in space research and future study that may reveal how the universe has evolved.
