Although Mount Vesuvius is considered Italy's biggest safety problem, Italy's civil protection agency fears possible eruptions of another active volcanoe near Naples, on the island of Ischia, as well as others under water. According to authorities, Ischia's volcano, which has not erupted for 700 years, is now building up magna. Italian experts are also concerned about a dozen of undersea volcanoes in the Mediterranean, off the island of Sicily. Italy's civil protection agency will create an international scientific body to study and monitor the country's underwater volcanoes and assess levels of risk; it will be the first in the world.
