Last year, the University of Bologna was Italy's only institution of higher education to rank in the top 200 in the world. In a small step forward, Italy had two institutions named to the 2010 Qs World University ranking of the top 200: Bologna and Rome's La Sapienza.
The University of Bologna was ranked the 176th best university in the world, while Rome's La Sapienza took 190th (up 15 spots since 2009).
Other Italian universities made the top 500 ranking, including the University of Padova (261), the Politecnico in Milan (295), University of Pisa (300), Florence (328) and Pavia (363).
The best university in the world? Cambridge takes the top spot this year, followed by Harvard, which dropped a spot after consistently ranking the world's best since 2004.
