Ancient city, modern art

Rome is currently hosting major shows on two of the greats of modern art: Vincent Van Gogh and Marc Chagall. The Van Gogh retrospective is the first show in Rome in more than 20 years on the work of Dutch artist. At the Vittoriano Complex until February 6, the show, Timeless Countryside and Modern City, features some 70 masterworks by Van Gogh from both public and private collections, in addition to over 30 works by the many artists he influenced, including Millet, Pissarro, Cézanne, Gauguin and Seurat. Call 06/6780664 for more information. The second big exhibition, The Upside-Down World of Chagall, is at the Ara Pacis museum until March 27. It features 140 works by Chagall, created from 1917 to 1982, to mark the 25th anniversary of the Russian-French artist's death. For more information, see www.arapacis.it.
