Melozzo on show ,

Forl? fetes Renaissance pioneer
(issue no. 136/2011 / February 10, 2011)

The San Domenico Museum in Forlì recently united all the transportable artwork by its most renowned son, Melozzo di Forlì, for a landmark exhibit, which opened on January 29 and will run through June 12. Entitled Melozzo di Forlì: Human beauty, between Piero della Francesca and Raphael, the exhibit, the most comprehensive exhibition ever focused on Melozzo, will feature, among other works by the artist and his mentors and apprentices, an immense cycle of frescoes by Melozzo from the Church of Holy Apostles in Rome, which were brought in for the occasion. Piero della Francesca's recently restored masterpiece, Madonna di Senigallia, will also be featured for the first time in almost 60 years. Merlozzo di Forlì (1438-1494), who was born and raised in Forlì and attended the Forlì school, is the first Renaissance painter known to successfully execute foreshortening. Although lesser known than many of his contemporaries, his innovative technique paved the way for others, including Michelangelo and Raphael.
