Florence’s approach to apericena can vary considerably. While some neighborhood hotspots pair elaborate pastas with classic Italian cocktails, less trendy locales line their countertops with crackers and nuts. The missing piece of the equation, though, is usually the international touch: most foreigners can only sip so many Negronis before craving something from ‘beyond the Boot.’ Now, thanks to Jullian, a new specialty shop in via Romana, Florence is enjoying a French twist on pre-dinner drinks and finger foods.

Nîmes-born brothers Romain and Anthony Lo Gatto both came to Florence for an improved way of life, but missed their favorite French products upon arrival. To fill this void, they opened Jullian, named after their maternal grandfather. Offering a range of French staples, from tempting brie to classic madeleine cookies, Jullian is a small paradise for Francophiles or any serious foodies. No French store would be sufficient without a wine selection, however, and Jullian’s stock is stellar, with dozens of Chablis and Cabernet Sauvignons lining the shelves.

The store’s main selling point, though, is their dedicated home delivery aperitivo services. With just 40 minutes’ notice, Romain can prepare a variety of platters for groups of four, eight or more, and will deliver anywhere within the historic center. The shop’s thoughtfully curated selection of cheeses, meats and wines is the most popular option, but for more elegant occasions, a foie gras platter can be arranged. Take a peek the next time you’re in the Oltrarno, and you may feel closer to Paris than Porta Romana.
