A quick overview of Tuscany’s oenological scene is in order ahead of this year’s regional wine preview week held from February 9 to 18 in Florence, San Gimignano, Montepulciano and Montalcino. Tuscany is home to almost 60,000 hectares of vineyards. Ninety-two percent of these world-famous vines make 160 million litres of DOCG and DOC wines, 93 per cent of which is red. Large volumes of IGP, or Supertuscan, wine continue to be produced to the tune of 66.6 million litres. The Siena province boasts the greatest surface area under vine (19,870 hectares), followed by Florence (16,850) and Grosseto (8,890).

The B2B Tuscan wine trade event BuyWine is now in its ninth year, held at Florence’s Fortezza da Basso on February 8 and 9. More than 200 Tuscan wineries, selected through a regional application process, will meet 200 buyers, from 44 countries, chosen by the city’s business promotion arm PromoFirenze according to their professionalism and expertise as well as the commercial interest shown towards the participating wineries. In addition to consolidated markets (Germany, Scandinavia, the U.S., Canada and Japan), 2019 sees buyers arriving for the first time from Macau, Malaysia, Argentina, Chile, the Philippines, India, Albania, Slovenia and Spain. Held on February 9 at Florence’s Fortezza da Basso, PrimAnteprima is part of the BuyWine event, marking the beginning of the 2019 Tuscan wine previews. This event offers global wine professionals and journalists the chance to taste vintages that have just been released to market by smaller but equally important consortia in Tuscany, such as Carmignano, Colline Lucchesi, Maremma Toscana, Montecarlo, Montecucco, Orcia, Pitigliano and Sovana, Terre di Pisa, Val di Cornia and Valdarno di Sopra. A round table will take place at noon on February 9 with discussions led by the regional councillor for agriculture Marco Remaschi and moderated by journalist and sommelier Andrea Gori: the latest facts and figures about the Tuscan wine scene and market trends will be presented by the ISMEA (Institute of Services for the Food Agricultural Market); the University of Pisa will illustrate a study on the effectiveness of the BuyWine commercial model; climate change, winery architecture and how and where wine is spoken about online will be debated.
