Remember when a movie can (could?) make you dream, make you dance, and make you feel on top of the world? Get ready for something big. Something big like Nikki Blonsky as Tracy Turnblad and John Travolta as her mother, Edna, in a wonderfully feel-good remake of John Waters’ and the divine Divine’s Hairspray, the 1960s fat-friendly musical extravaganza that puts the ‘be’ back into ‘obesity’ and cheerfully declares that flab is fun and racism sucks. Beautifully crafted and not as effortless as it looks, its lively retro song and dance expertise and overflow of exuberant talent made it a deserved summer hit in the US. And brought Michelle Pfeiffer back!
