Now that
we’re back from vacation and ready to get the new year’ under way, I wanted to
include two examples of Florentine words for inspiration. The first is an
example to be avoided and the second is meant to prompt you to get moving after
a summer lounging at the beach.
Pissero/a: An adjective, usually used to describe women who
dress simply and a little boring, with modest hair and make-up. It connotes a
low-profile type-either married or single-usually considered a good’ and
reserved person, if inconspicuous and mousy.
Example: La su’ moglie l” proprio
pissera! His
wife is so mousy!
Toni: Gym suit. The
origins of this word are uncertain; however, according to the Accademia della
Crusca, the Italian language academy, it is likely a derivative of the English
proper name Tony or Anthony, a popular British circus clown who wore a similar
suit. It could also come from the period following the liberation of Florence during World War II thanks to an Allied soldier
named Tony, known for his grey sweat suit.
Example: Mamma, non dimenticare che c” da
comprare i’ toni per la scuola! Mom, don’t forget we have to buy my gym suit for
school!
