This week’s Florentinisms come to us courtesy of Canadian Denise Tann, who contacted us via email after discovering our website. Thanks, Denise!
Dear TF, I just discovered Florentinisms. I had no idea some of those words were just Florentine and not Italian! Trombaio? What else do you call a plumber? I’m Canadian and my entire family is Florentine, so Florentine is all I ever learned. Your website is great and I will definitely bookmark it! Here are some suggestions for your dictionary.
Gingilloni
to hang out, waste time
Example: ‘Sei staha a gingilloni tutt’ i’ giorno!’ (You’ve been out all day wasting time!) ‘L’arte della gingillometria’ can also be used to indicated the art or practice of hanging out not doing anything.
Spiaccicare ragni
Literally, to squash spiders. Colloquially, to be slow.
Tira via!
Come on!
Example: ‘Tira via! Un sta lì a spiaccica’ ragni’
