This year, the VII annual “Settimana della cultura” of Florence is dedicated to the art and culture of the 20th Century. An array of events will be held from Monday, May 16th to Saturday the 21st, with the highlight being an exhibition on writer and politician, Giuseppe Mazzini, in honour of the 200th anniversary of his birth.

Along with the traditional historical itineraries that are usually included in Florence’s “Culture Week”, several special events will be dedicated to literature, music, theatre and film that are representative of the 20th Century.

The late 1800’s and the entire 1900’s marked an important period for art and culture in Florence and in 2004 the City began the initiative Cultural Tours of Florence and the 1900’s, in order to preserve the memory of such an important historical period. It also serves as a reminder that Florence did not stop with the Renaissance, but continued to be an important centre for arts and culture up to the present day.

The week will include free walking tours to the homes and publishing houses of the period’s literary greats like D’Annunzio, Campana, Montale, and Pratolini. Other tours will take participants on an itinerary that demonstrates the architectural changes, that were sometimes quite drastic, made during the 1900’s. There will also be theatrical literary readings at the National Library, and a concert of the music by the top composer of the day, Ugalberto de Angelis.
