Both residents and tourists alike have long complained that the stadium set up every summer in Piazza Santa Croce for the Historic Football (Calcio Storico) matches is truly an eyesore in front of one of the most beautiful churches of the city. And now city councillors have fi nally thought of a possible solution – huge two-dimensional reproductions of the piazza wrapped around the entire stadium.

Because Calcio Storico has long been a Florentine tradition as well as an important tourist attraction, officials could not actually move the temporary football stadium to another location. The matches, however, do take place at the height of summer (June 24, 26 and July 3), and those who come to see the largest piazza in town and the façade of Santa Croce are met with a makeshift stadium that almost completely blocks their view.

The Councillor for Popular Traditions has now offi cially proposed that the blocked view could be alleviated by wrapping two huge banners with printed reproductions of the piazza around the stadium. Two banners, 42 and 30 meters long, would be necessary to cover the stadium. The City hopes these banners might also be an attractive advertising space.
