The lower level of Palazzo Strozzi, affectionately called “Strozzina,” has finally reopened its doors to the public, offering yet another breathtaking exhibition space in Florence. The 1,300 square metre subterranean space has been closed for almost 30 years, but with the recently finished restoration project that cost a total of 760,000 euro, the space is open once again.
Strozzina’s reopening was inaugurated last week with a show dedicated to 19th century figurative art from Florence and Tuscany at large. Many of the works on display are from private collections and have never before been on exhibition for the public. Among the artists represented are well-known painters of the era, such as Giovanni Fattori, Ottone Rosai, and Lorenzo Viani.
The Strozzina will host another interesting event this weekend. Ferragamo will be putting on a fashion show on Saturday, May 30th. Alhough the event is by invitation only, the show will also be broadcast on large screens in squares throughout the city centre.
The Strozzina and all of its activities fall into the city-organised initiative, “Genio Fiorentino,” which has the goal of improving cultural and tourist activities in the city and province of Florence.
