The decision was recently made for Italy to be the headquarters of the Medi-terranean’s only marine mammal sanctuary. Talks between representatives from France and Monaco concluded with the approval of the construction of the sanctuary in Genoa. The centre will be set up to protect, monitor, and encourage the growth of dolphins, whales and other marine life. The sanctuary, created in 1999, spans along the coasts of Provence, Montecarlo, Liguria, Corsica and Sardinia, its endpoints are Toulon in southern France, Capo Falcone in western Sardinia and Fosso Chiarore on the west coast of Italy. As well as banning deep-sea fishing, the recent talks also discussed ways to limit water pollution and shipping restrictions.
