The ‘Ndrangheta is one of the most powerful and widespread organized crime organizations in the world. It is sphere of influence touches not only Italy and Europe, but also North and South America and Australia, yet it is one of the least known Italian mafias in the world.
Because its composition, practices and hierarchy have kept the ‘Ndrangheta under wraps, the anti-mafia association Sud, based in Reggio Calabria, has launched a multimedia archive, part of a larger project called Stop ‘Ndrangheta.
The archive, available on the Internet at www.stopndrangheta.it, features an array of photos, news articles, documents and witness accounts of the workings of this powerful, yet very secretive criminal organization that has such a strong hold on the Italian Mezzogiorno. It also has a section on the anti-mafia movement in Calabria.
‘Our objective is to destabilize the basis of the public’s consensus on the ‘Ndrangheta, and respond to violence and weapons with culture and information’, says president of the Sud association, Alessio Magro. The archive aims highlight the strong anti-mafia movement in Calabria and encourage an alternative view of the region.
The project will also work in Calabria’s schools. To help inform youth about the reach of the ‘Ndrangheta, it will engage the students in using and helping to compile the archive.
