The 21 young singers of the Coast Guard Cadet Chorale will perform March 10 at 11:30am as part of the annual wreath-laying honoring Florentine explorer Amerigo Vespucci, the man who gave the American continent its name. The ceremony will be held in Borgo Ognissanti at the San Giovanni di Dio Hospital, the former headquarters of the Vespucci family when Amerigo was alive.

United States consul general, Mary Ellen Countryman, says the performance was arranged as ‘a foretaste of the Vespucci celebrations of 2012′ that Florence mayor Matteo Renzi has announced. The celebrations are designed to strengthen the ties between Florence and all the nations of the Americas.

The chorale will offer another free performance on March 10: they will sing at 6:30pm at St. James Church in Florence before travelling to Livorno for another concert and a day of cultural exchange with Italian naval cadets of the Accademia Navale on March 12.
