Over the weekends of April 24-25 and May 1-2, members of the Italian Forum for the Movement of Water collected signatures in hundreds of piazzas across Italy. According to estimates, the group collected some 100,000 signatures in the first 48 hours. The petition requests a repeal of the law passed in November 2009 that allows for the privatization of water and asks that a referendum on the controversial issue be held by next year. The greens and like-minded politicians and parties support the national movement. For more information, see www.acquabenecomune.org or www.acquabenecomunetoscana.it.
