Three years after his last trip to the United States, president of the Italian Republic Giorgio Napolitano recently travelled to Washington to pay an official visit to Barack Obama. The meeting between the two leaders was ‘very cordial, both on a personal and professional level,’ and the U.S. president ‘confirmed his interest in an ever more united Europe,’ Napolitano said in a press conference following the meeting. Napolitano assured Obama that ‘the euro was not at risk’ despite the seriousness of the debt crisis in the eurozone.

At the press conference, Napolitano also said he extended an invitation to President Obama to participate in one of next year’s celebrations marking the 150th anniversary of Italy’s unification.
