Local officials in Rome want to boost tourism by allowing boats to cruise the Tiber River. Rome, which is preparing its candidacy as host city for the 2020 Olympic Games, wants to offer boat rides along its ancient waterway, which connects the city centre to the coast. The proposal to allow tourist boats on the Tiber, first introduced more than 20 years ago, has met with much controversy until now. City leaders cite successful initiatives in Europe, like the Bateau Mouches, which ply the Seine in Paris, and those navigating London’s Thames River.
