A recent study by Eurobarometer reveals that one out
of four Italians fear environmental pollution more than the effects of the
economic crisis. This concern reflects the recent environmental disaster in
Japan, according to farmer’s association Colidretti, which has increased
awareness of the negative effects of nuclear power. Eurobarometer data also
reveals other fears: 20 percent of Italians’ greatest fear is the economic
crisis; 17 percent fear low-quality and expired foods that can harm health; 11
percent fear the risk of an automobile accident; and 10 percent worry about
crime levels and about falling ill.
