There are some
10,000 mothers aged 14 to 19 in Italy, according to a recent report by Save the
Children. The majority of Italy’s youngest mothers are 18 or 19 years, but
approximately one-fourth are minors. The report also reveals that 82 percent
are Italian-born and 18 percent are foreigners with residency in Italy. Over 70
percent of Italy’s young mothers are from the south and the islands; 60 percent
currently have a companion and 19 percent of these mothers have jobs.
