Season ends in a
draw

For the last
game of the season, the Fiorentina played against Brescia, though neither team
had anything to fight for: Fiorentina could not reach the European
qualifications and Brescia was headed for the Serie B. After only two minutes,
left-winger Juan Manual Vargas scored a goal, giving the Fiorentina an early
advantage. Fifteen minutes later, Brescia striker Eder evened out the score by
kicking the ball past Sébastien Frey. Late in the second half, winger Alessio Cerci
scored his seventh goal of the season to put the Fiorentina back in the lead.
With only three minutes before the end of the match, Brescia’s left-back Pietro
Accardi tied it up. At the end of the match, Alessandro Gamberini said, ‘Next
season we have to start off with enthusiasm and quickly find cohesiveness for
the team.’

Transfer market now
open

The end of the
season unofficially marks the opening of the players market. Fiorentina is
already saying goodbye to four of its players, whose contracts have expired:
Vlada Avramov, Gianluca Comotto, Marco Donadel and Mario Santana. Head coach
Sinisa Mihajlovic commented, ‘I have faith in the club and the director.’ He is
certain that new players will arrive, even as some of the team’s important
players are rumored to be leaving, among them Vargas, Frey, Adrian Mutu,
Riccardo Montolivo and Alberto Gilardino. The market for transferring players
is open all summer and will close around the end of August.

Prandelli calls up
three Viola players

Italian head
coach Cesare Prandelli has called three Viola players to be a part of the
Italian team: Alessandro Gamberini, Montolivo and Gilardino. Italy’s first
match will be against Astonia on June 3, and then four days later against the
Republic of Ireland.

Primavera playing
in the quarterfinals

On June 5,
Fiorentina’s Primavera team will be competing against Atalanta in Lucca for the
championship finals. The semifinals will be held on June 8 and 9, and the
finals on June 12 in Pistoia.

Happy birthday to
De Silvestri and D’Agostino

Viola
right-back Lorenzo De Silvestri turned 23 on May 23, just one day after the end
of the season. De Silvestri has been with the Fiorentina for two years and last
year was called to play with the Italian team for the first time in his career.
Gaetano D’Agostino celebrated his 29th birthday on June 3. The club signed on
the midfielder last year and has scored three goals for the Fiorentina this
season. Originally from Palermo, D’Agostino recently said that he loves
Florence and plans to live here even after his career is over.
