The future union of two separate towns on the Tuscany-Liguria border under the same municipality may soon be a reality. Located in the Lunigiana (see TF 143 and 136), the towns of Castelnuovo Magra (Tuscany) and Ortonovo (Liguria) are discussing the details of a possible merger under the same public entity: the township of Luni. The main reason for the proposed municipality, which would likely be part of the Liguria region, is to save public funds. However, it is also supported by the pro-Lunezia movement (see TF 125), which has, since the years of Italian unification, advocated the creation of a new region in the Lunigiana that would incorporate areas of Liguria, Tuscany, Emilia-Romagna and Lombardy.
