Dear Editor,
There seems to be a rumour out there that the Paperback Exchange is closing.
This rumour is false!
We are indeed sorry that other bookstores in Florence are closing, but Paperback Exchange is not.
We have no intention of closing. Despite the current economic crisis, online competition, and electronic gadgets, PapEx continues to be, year after year, a profitable enterprise. One doesn’t close a successful business.
It is understandable, on the other hand, that Emily and Maurizio, whose ages total more than ‘120′ years, intend to retire sooner or later! But they will take all the time they need to find a new owner (or owners) for the shop, someone capable and competent, who shares the conviction that the object called ‘book,’ the variety which is made of paper, glue, and ink, still has a special place in the history of mankind, and it is still far from its last curtain call.
PapEx is in good health, and will be around for years to come. We love being part of it, and it’s evident that a significant portion of the English-reading community here feel the same way. They support us by purchasing their books here, and we thank them di cuore!
Sincerely,
Paperback Exchange, Florence
