Editor’s note: In TF 151, we ran a story about a divorce and custody case involving alleged international child abduction. We ran the story because we believe it is important to chronicle events that touch on issues that affect the Florence community and expats. We heard from many readers, some applauding and some criticizing our decision to run the story; others commenting about the alleged actions of the parties involved; and this one, asking that in any custody case, the child’s welfare be put ahead of any other considerations.

Dear Editor,

I would like to comment on your article ‘Fight to find Florentine kids’ (TF 151). First, I would like to point out that your article is based mostly on information that was given by the father and does not take into consideration the other side of the story. The truth always lies in the middle, and only Ms. Grin and her husband know exactly what has happened in the past.

I do not necessarily condone child kidnapping and removing children from their native home, but as a mother in a foreign country, I understand the need to protect one’s children at any costs. From my childhood experience, I know that divorce is hard, no matter how smoothly it goes. Unfortunately, these children have had to experience years of a bitter divorce and custody battle.

I hope that the courts really took into account what is best for the children. I would be very curious to know if the children were able to express their opinion on the ‘truth’ and their well-being.

Finally, I think that we should not judge which parent is right or wrong but keep in mind that the goal in any divorce and custody case is to ensure that the children can have a normal, stable life in a loving family.

Sincerely,

An expat in Florence
