Recent statistics show that Florence continues to improve on its own record for tourism. A magnet for culture- and art-seeking travelers from around the world, the province of Florence was especially popular in 2011, with tourisms levels up by many measures. Approximately 12 million hotel rooms were filled in the 12-month period, up 8.4 percent from 2010; and 8 million hotel rooms were filled in the city, up 7.1 percent from 2010.

‘These statistics come after those of 2010, which was also a very positive year. [In] the next years, more than the total number of hotel rooms rented, it will be important to boost the number of days travelers stay in the city. These numbers also remind us how tourism is an important factor in economic growth, and it can have immediate positive effects [on the economy],’ said Giacomo Billi, provincial councillor of tourism.
