The
World Road Championships are expected to bring thousands of people to the
region next September and the event should give a significant boost to the
economy.

Some
400,000 visitors are expected to stay an average of four days in Lucca,
Pistoia, Prato and Florence, spending an estimated 100 euro per day. Over 2,000
new jobs will be created in Tuscany, and the region’s GDP will rise by 227
million euro, a growth of 0.07 percent, according to figures released by the
Institute for Economic Planning of the Region.

The
event will cost 197 million euro, with only 37 million coming from local
authorities. But it is estimated that the eventual business generated by the
championships will total 423 million euro, 160 million from tourists and
guests, and the rest from organizers, teams and athletes.

‘There will be major repercussions for the economy of
our region: a benefit for everyone,’ said deputy mayor of Florence, Dario
Nardella.
