Prime Minister Enrico Letta has resigned from his office as head of the Italian government.

Talks are expected to begin this afternoon at 5pm with the President of the Senate Pietro Grasso and at 5.45 pm with the President of the Chamber of Deputies Laura Boldrini.

It is expected that Italian President Giorgio Napolitano will quickly hand the task of forming a new government to incumbent Mayor of Florence and leader of the Italian Democratic Party (PD) Matteo Renzi.

Presiding at a ceremony at Palazzo Vecchio, Renzi declared, ‘This is one of the best moments in the last 5 years.’

The Florentine spotted Matteo Renzi waiting for the delayed 8.41 train in his hometown of Pontassieve this morning. Dressed in an overcoat and green scarf, Renzi seemed as much as a commuter as anyone else, talking to a friend/colleague and using his mobile phone.
