Skeletons at the Uffizi

As part of the New Uffizi project, work is continuing in the area beneath the Uffizi library reading room, next to piazza del Grano.
 
In recent months, numerous archaeological and anthropological gems have been unearthed, including a cemetery dating to the fifth-sixth century BCE, in which 60 or so skeletons have been identified. The remains are believed to have belonged to victims of a plague or similar epidemic, due to the way in which they were laid side by side to make the most of the space available.
