Florence as we know it will soon shift shape. By January 2015, the entire territory of the province of Florence will be classified as the Florence metropolitan area. The Lower House just approved the proposed Del Rio bill, which will re-classify the following 9 provinces as metropolitan areas: Florence, Milan, Turin, Bologna, Venice, Genoa, Reggio Calabria, Bari, and Naples.

The local implications for Florence are huge: the population will go from approximately 350 thousand to one million inhabitants, and some modifications will be made to the city’s governing bodies and councils. Under the Del Rio model, the mayor of each provincial capital will become the mayor of the metropolitan area.

Piero Giunti, the President of the Provincial Council of Florence, explained that the province of Florence will continue with its predetermined agenda and activities through June 22, 2014. ‘We will continue our passionate leadership and we’ll be well-prepared for the changes that the new metropolitan area will bring. We’ll continue to work at full capacity to ensure that we successfully carry out all of the important responsibilities entrusted to us.’
