Michelangelo’s David continues to dominate travelers’ bucket lists, and he may see a spike in visitors after his latest accolade: the Accademia Gallery was just named the top museum in Italy in Trip Advisor’s 2014 Travelers’ Choice Awards. Outranking the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, the Borghese Gallery and even the Vatican Museums, the Accademia also took international honors, coming in fifth place globally and second among European museums, just behind the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg.

The monuments, hotels and museums that receive Travelers’ Choice Awards are selected based on millions of user-generated reviews. Trip Advisor uses an algorithm that considers both the quality and quantity of comments on any given destination over a 12-month period.

For Italy, Florence was tied with Turin for the highest number of museums on the list, with the Uffizi and the Bargello also placing.

If you’re considering a visit to the Accademia, combine it with a Florence sightseeing tour from CiaoFlorence!
