After a successful run from April to August, the Elliott Erwitt/Icons exhibition at San Gimignano’s Raffaele De Grada Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art has been extended to November 2.
An American photographer born in Paris, Erwitt is famous for his tongue-in-cheek approach to photography. He has worked on a number of documentary and feature films but is best known for his black-and-white images of absurd situations and events.
Erwitt himself selected the images on display, calling them the most representative works of his repertoire. He also chose nine self-portraits exclusive to the Icons exhibition, including several colour photographs of his alter-ego, André S. Solidor, a playful caricature of contemporary art connoisseurs.
Apart from his more humorous and satirical work, Erwitt has captured countless famous faces over the years. Visitors can expect photographs of icons ranging from Grace Kelly to Che Guevara hanging alongside kitschier shots of dogs, dancers and more.
The exhibition is open daily from 9.30am to 7pm.
