An unconventional ‘May-December’ couple is making headlines. The pair in question is 91-year-old widower Primo Vicini and his 37-year-old caretaker, Maia Rusishvili, originally from Georgia. Despite familial disapproval over their 54-year age difference, the two were set to wed in Lastra a Signa on September 23. The nuptials did not go forward as planned.

Vicini’s children only heard of their father’s intentions through friends who happened to see the Comune’s marriage announcements. Weeks prior to the ceremony, they had urged him to reconsider, enlisting the help of lawyer Alberto Corsinovi when their efforts failed. After the children filed a formal complaint in court, the judge found no grounds for halting the ceremony.

Minutes before the wedding was scheduled to take place, however, authorities decided not to proceed, based on an admission from the groom. He explained that he initially did not plan to remarry, but ‘was forced to by [his] children’ when they refused to accept his decision to leave his house behind to Rusishvili. Hearing this, one of the wedding witnesses refused to perform his duties.

Corsinovi plans to stay involved with the proceedings, perhaps taking the issue back to court following yesterday’s events. Vicini and Rusishvili still have 60 days to marry, and declared that they plan to do so as soon as possible.
