Prato’s Palazzo Pretorio is currently hosting Capolavori che si incontrano (The Meeting of Masterpieces), comprising 86 artworks by a range of iconic Italian painters. Spanning the 15th to the 18th centuries, the works on display offer an overview of Venetian and Tuscan painting from that period. Tintoretto, Caravaggio and Filippo Lippi are just a few of the famous names in the lineup.
The exhibition is broken down into four thematic sections. The first, Imago Magistra, explores religious themes, focusing on the varied depictions of that most sacred image in Western painting—the Madonna and Child. L’immagine ideale instead hones in on how artists like Cesare Dandini and Gaspare Diziani modeled their work after classical Greek and Roman ideals. The emphasis shifts to portraiture in Il volto dell’idea: il ritratto, followed by a focus on landscape and still life painting in the final section, La bella natura.
As part of COOLT, Tuscany’s first-ever Culture Week, free guided visits of the exhibition will be offered in English on Friday, October 10 and Friday, October 17 (5pm for both dates).
