The ceiling of the market will be transformed into a flying carpet, a historic building will be used as a huge screen, statues will be dressed up, and the façade of a church will be used to display the city’s history. The fifth edition of F-Light festival will be back in Florence from December 7 to January 6, and its bringing with it special scenography and artistic itineraries. There will also be permanent lighting changes in the Cascine, via San Leonardo, and san Niccolò areas.

On the first floor of the Mercato Centrale an installation will be set up mimicking a flying carpet. This work is taken from Daniel Buren’s collection ‘Luci d’artista’. It will involve a net of red and white, and blue and white cubes tied together by steel wiring, and hung from the ceiling in the market. In piazza Signoria the fountain will be illuminated by festive special effects that change color, and the sculptures under the loggia will also be lit up. In front of the loggia, on the Pallazo delle Generali, a projection will display a video created by Maurizio Baldini, delineating the history of Michelangelo’s masterpieces.

The creators of the event ‘Dimora Luminosa’ are young designers from the Istituto Europeo di Design (IED) and The Fake Factory, and they will be reinventing the Santo Spirito basilica’s façade. This year’s theme of ‘Beyond Generations’ will require the active participation of all the city’s inhabitants and the visitors of the piazza, irrespective of age and background. The show will be held from December 13 to January 6, and will feature images of trees, handprints, comics, childish drawings, parrots, and optical art.

In piazza Santa Moria Novella there will be another light show entitled ‘Novecento. Veranda di un secolo’. The story of last century’s art will be told through images, numbers, graphics, animations and sounds, all projected on the side of the loggia of the Museo del Novecento.

From December 8 the traditional Christmas lights will be turned on in piazza del Duomo and the piazzale Michelangelo. Also from December 10, 185 trees throughout the main viali around the city center will be decorated with lights.
