Foodies in Florence have a full month ahead of them: from November 10 to 30, the Biennale Enogastronomica Fiorentina is taking place in restaurants, shops, piazzas and other venues throughout the city. Wine tastings, aperitivi, dinners, special markets and more are all on the menu.
Organised by Confesercenti Firenze under the creative direction of journalist Leonardo Romanelli, the festival was inspired by Florentine figure Leo Codacci, a local journalist who passed away in 2006, well-known for his dedication to protecting local culinary customs.
Individual events are planned for each day of the festival, but throughout its three-week duration, attendees will also have the chance to take part in the ongoing Un Piatto Tipico al Ristorante initiative. Various Florentine restaurants will be preparing historic regional and local specialties that have become more difficult to find in recent years. For those with a sweet tooth, the Il Gelato della Biennale series will offer the chance to sample the best flavours by Florence’s most highly regarded ice-cream makers.
Food and art go hand in hand in Florence, which is why works by local sculptor and painter Antonio Lo Pinto will be on display in different venues throughout the event. Lo Pinto is known for his depictions of gastronomic themes. He has created two sculptures of Tuscan steaks, using white Carrara marble for the fat and red marble from France for the meat.
