Florence’s water polo team has returned to Serie A. Founded in 1904, the squad has a long and golden history, winning nine championships. But seven of those nine victories happened in the 1930s, when the team played in the Arno and had the talents of Olympic champion Gianni De Magistris. Though the team is back in Serie A, its aim is high: according to the team’s president, Andrea Pieri, this is just the first step toward a new era.

 

The German mole

TBM-EPB S957 is on its way to Florence. Made in Germany, the drilling machine that will be used to excavate the high-speed rail tunnel beneath Florence will travel by sea and land before being reassembled in Campo di Marte sometime before September. Safer and with more capabilities than the drill previously used, the machine will adapt to the terrain encountered during drilling.

 

French Fiorentina

ACF Fiorentina has signed a new deal with French company Le Coq Sportif, which will provide its uniforms as of the 2015/2016 season. The five-year agreement is the first football contract Le Coq Sportif has signed since dressing the Italian national side in 1982, when the Azzurri won the World Cup. The deal doesn’t clothe la Viola merely in purple; the new kit also includes a blue version.

 

Florentine wins Best SommelierFacing down tough competition from Livornese Massimo Tortora and fellow Florentine Iacopo Tonelli, Florence’s Andrea Galanti, of Gastronomia Galanti (piazza della Libertà), was named Best Sommelier in Tuscany for 2015 in the annual competition sponsored by the Italian Sommelier Association (AIS). At the award ceremony in the seaside town of Lido di Camaiore, Galanti commented, ‘Obtaining the regional title meant a lot to me and now it’s become a reality.’
