The Sant’Ambrogio church is at risk of damage and deterioration, and the neighbourhood’s residents, business owners and the church’s priest have proposed a plan to protect it.

The group has submitted two options to the City of Florence. One is to install small posts chained together to prevent access, similar to the protection in front of the Santa Maria Nuova hospital. The other solution is to install slightly taller posts, also chained together, combined with a sign reading ‘Vietato oltrepassare’ (‘Do not pass’). The proposal also includes installing a ramp for disabled access on the borgo La Croce side. Discussions about the proposed protections and improvement are expected to involve the superintendency for cultural heritage and Florence’s councillor for economic development, Giovanni Bettarini.

Bettarini commented, ‘It’s a positive fact that the project has been presented by residents and business owners. When a revitalization project is a shared idea, it’s already an excellent starting point.’

However, it may take at least a year for the project to be approved and implemented.
