According to the course’s founder, Professor Andrea Villarini, this MOOC (massive online open course) is currently the first and only course of its kind in Italy dedicated to teaching Italian as a second language. The collaboration with respected online course, Future Learn, is expected to provide a platform of diffusion for this language MOOC, which hopes to ultimately reach at least 30,000 subscribers. It looks likely that this figure will be exceeded, however, due to the appeal of the romance language.

The free foreign language teaching site, aimed at learners at the A1 level, will run for six weeks and consist of approximately 3 hours per week.

MOOC for languages is an alternative to standard classroom courses. It benefits people of all ages, from younger learners to the older generation.

The University of Foreigners of Siena prides itself on the uniqueness of its research centre, dedicated to eLearning for languages, and has now even developed a Master’s programme to become an online Italian teacher.
