As part of the Catholic Church’s Jubilee Year of Mercy, Siena is hosting “Siena in Cammino,” focused on the church’s traditions of pilgrimage and hospitality.

On Saturday April 9, 16 and 23, modern pilgrims can participate in the Path of Mercy, which starts with a guided visit to the museum complex of Santa Maria della Scala and the Opera della Metropolitana and moves to the Pellegrinaio, followed by the Sacristy, the Pellegrinaio delle Donne, the Siena Cathedral and Donatello’s famous Madonna of Forgiveness in the neighbouring Opera del Duomo Museum, the cathedral’s crypt, and, finally, the baptistery. Participation costs 25 euro and reservations are required. For more information, call 347/6137678 or email sienasms@c-way.it.

On Sunday April 10, 17 and 24, groups will walk a 25-kilometre portion of the via Francigena, from Siena to Ponte d’Arbia, tracing the route walked by the Society of Saint Catherine during the Jubilee of 1600. Participants will explore key pilgrimage destinations and will receive a “pilgrim’s sack” or bisaccia, containing a packed lunch. The Comune di Monteroni D’Arbia will provide a shuttle service back to Siena. Booking is required by 4pm on the preceding Saturday; call 347/6137678 or email sienasms@c-way.it.
