Florentine art lovers around the world will soon be able to follow the Uffizi from afar: the institution's official Twitter and Instagram accounts (@uffizigalleries for both) are scheduled to go live on August 14.

The launch date wasn't chosen at random. By setting the debut for Ferragosto weekend, administrators hope to send out a welcoming message in line with recent initiatives, special openings and programming introduced by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism (Mibact). "We decided to connect the debut of our official Instagram and Twitter accounts with this particular summer weekend, marked by the Olympic Games, which Italy is thoroughly enjoying," commented Uffizi director Eike Schmidt. "Our competitive challenge will be telling the museums' stories and promoting their value, narrating them in a different light–one that adequately highlights their character, which is both universal and peculiarly, truly Italian, not just Florentine and Tuscan."

Italian museums have lagged behind their European peers in their use of social media. These two long-awaited channels will join the official website Uffizi.it as a united digital voice for the museums, which include the Uffizi Gallery as well as the Pitti Palace complex (the Palatine Gallery and Appartamenti Reali, Modern Art Gallery, Boboli Gardens, Silver Museum and Porcelain Museum).
