The City of Florence will more than double the CCTV cameras throughout the centre and outlying neighbourhoods.
Another 450 video cameras will be added to the 350 already active in Florence’s streets and piazzas. It will be the first time that this technology will be installed in all five of the city’s quartieri, from the historic centre to Campo di Marte, Le Cure, Isolotto, via Senese and via Baracci.
City councillor for urban security and municipal police Federico Gianassi commented, “CCTV cameras are important for security reasons and liveability as well as for the city’s regeneration. Having the entire city, from the centre to the suburbs, under surveillance by sophisticated, state of the art equipment, which integrate with the work of the police, is a response to the need to keep our citizens secure.”
The operation will cost four million euro, with funding coming from the Palazzo Vecchio, the national government and the European Union.
