A hotel on the shores of Lake Garda has been named the greenest hotel in Europe by user-generated travel review website TripAdvisor.

Northern part of Lake Garda

The Lefay Resort & Spa Lago di Garda in Gargnano came top of the national and European rankings and fourth worldwide thanks to its bioarchitecture and green energy commitment. Elsewhere in Italy, the Dolomite region of Trentino Alto Adige boasted three of the nation’s top ten environment-first hotels: Hotel Leitlhof – Dolomiten, in San Candido (5th place), Wellness Hotel Lupo Bianco, in Canazei (6th place) and Alp & Wellness Sport Hotel Panorama, in Fai della Paganella (7th place).

In the survey, 38 per cent of Italians interviewed said they would make eco-friendly travel choices in 2017, while 15 per cent commented that they had chosen a hotel due to its environmental impact over the last year. This focus on sustainability was also reflected in food and travel choices, with 88 per cent of respondents saying they seek to eat local and organic products when travelling and 31% use electronic boarding passes. Moreover, 28 per cent of those surveyed said that they opt for eco-friendly tours using hybrid vehicles or bikes, or walking tours, when visiting new places.

According to TripAdvisor, the most sustainable hotel in the world is Tambo del Inka at the Luxury Collection Resort & Spa in Urubamba, Peru.
