Work on Florence’s new tram lines is slated to end in February 2018, according to a press release issued by the city council.

Running from piazza della Unità to the airport and from Santa Maria Novella railway station to Careggi hospital, the much-awaited tram connections will offer new solutions to the city’s busiest routes.

Pre-operational testing is expected to begin in December on some lines in order to enable the service to take effect as soon as possible.

At this morning’s meeting held at the Ponte Vecchio, attended by Florence mayor Dario Nardella, city councillor for mobility Stefano Giorgetti and the firms involved in the construction Tram Firenze, French-owned RATP and Meridiam, Alstom, Grandi Lavori Fincosit SpA, Architecna, C.M.B. and Ansaldo Sistemi, the City of Florence urged all stakeholders to speed up the work through night and double shifts.

Nardella: “We are faced with an ambitious objective but one that is within our capacity. The countdown has now begun and we can announce that the traffic-related disturbances are now in their final stages.”

Giorgetti added, “Soon we will verify if it will be possible to do pre-operational testing of certain sections in December. For example, from the Fortezza to Careggi for Line 3 and from Peretola to Gordigiani for Line 2.”

On average, between 160 and 180 people are working on the project every day.
