Hundreds of people took to the streets of Florence on Saturday, September 16 to march against rape culture.
Organized by the Non una di meno association, the march began in piazzale Michelangelo at 8:30pm before moving down the Rampe to piazza Poggi along lungarno Serristori and finishing in piazza della Repubblica.
On the march’s Facebook page, the organizers explained the reasons for the demonstration: We’re protesting to show our solidarity with the women raped in Florence on the night of September 6th and with all women subjected to violence in the home, in the workplace, and everywhere else, every day…We're on the side of the victims, and we denounce the sexist rape culture that surrounds us and that has become even more evident after this event, a culture that constantly insinuates the doubt that the victims ‘were asking for it’ or ‘who knows if it's really true’.
The rally was held as investigations continue into accusations by two American women that they were raped by on-duty police officers in Florence.
