An international call for ideas has been launched for the new exit of the Medici Chapels Museum.

Positioned between the Chapel of the Princes, the New Sacristy and the far right of the transept of the Basilica of San Lorenzo in canto dei Nelli, plans for the new exit must also include a roof, a staircase connecting the basement, where the bookshop and facilities are situated, and a renewed look at the museum layout.

At the press conference announcing the call for ideas, Paola D’Agostino, director of the Bargello Museums, whose administration also encompasses the Medici Chapels, “The competition is the final stage in a long process promoted and financed by the Italian Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities, aimed at improving access, valorizing and ensuring the safety of this museum complex, unique in the world for its architectural and sculptural riches.”

Silvia Moretti and Serena Biancalani, presidents of the Florence Architects Foundation and Association, continued, “The hope is that with this call a new season can begin, whereby the public administrations use this took in a systematic way, as is the case in many European countries.”

The call will run until 12 noon on February 15, 2018 and the results will be announced by May 21, 2018. The winner will be assigned 16,936.28 euro, in addition to a commission for subsequent planning levels and works management. 16,000 euro will be shared between the best five plans presented to pay for expenses.
