Threats of nuclear war, mafia-controlled trade, Twitter rants from world leaders: expect no sugarcoating of float themes at this year’s installment of Viareggio Carnevale, an event known for its satire and political provocation. Kicking off on January 27, the annual celebrations are a period of masquerade parties and parades leading up to the Christian liturgical season of Lent, traditionally marked by asceticism and sobriety.

Per tradition, allegorical papier-mâché floats—some weighing up to 40 tons—will provide social commentary and color in the processions, which take place in a 2km ring-like circuit along Viareggio’s seaside promenade. Among the (papier-mâché) figures slated to make appearances this year are Donald Trump, Emmanuel Macron, Kim Jong-un and Vladimir Putin. Tributes to the fallen soldiers of World War I are also in the works, given that 2018 will mark the 100th anniversary of the conflict’s end.
Although a festive atmosphere colors Viareggio for much of February, the main events and parades will take place on select Saturdays and Sundays. The initial masked parade runs on January 27 and will be followed by fireworks to inaugurate the month of festivities; subsequent dates are February 4, 11, 13 and 17. On the final date, judges announce the winners of the 2018 float competition.
