On February 10, Giotto’s masterpiece Madonna of San Giorgio alla Costa went on display at the Opera del Duomo Museum, part of the Florence Cathedral complex.

The masterpiece is on temporary loan from the Santo Stefano al Ponte Diocesan Museum, which is currently closed to the public, 25 years after the via dei Georgofili bombing in Florence, which left the painting damaged and with tears caused by a splinter in the left-hand angel’s clothing still visible.

Regarded as one of the most emblematic paintings of the Renaissance with artistic features typical of Giotto’s work at the end of the 13th century, the masterpiece was previously thought to be lost, but in the 1930s scholars identified the Madonna and Child, in which Mary is celebrated as a queen. In the early 18th century, the painting was adapted to fit with the renovation of the Church of San Giorgio alla Costa where it was on display. In the 20th century, the painting was moved to the Diocesan Museum, which was closed after the attacks in 1993.
